Frequently Asked Questions...

Who is eligible for Medicare rebates?

You may be eligible for Medicare rebates if you have a mental health condition and your GP provides you with a mental health care plan for treatment.  Click here for a list of mental health conditions covered by the Medicare scheme.

Are Medicare rebates available for phone consultations?

Yes

Can I obtain a referral from my psychiatrist?

Yes. Psychiatrists and paediatricians can refer directly to a psychologist.

How many sessions can be covered by Medicare?

Medicare rebates are available for up to 10 individual and 10 group services per calendar year to patients with an assessed mental health condition.

What if I need more sessions?

For people with severe mental health conditions, 10 sessions per calendar year may not be enough.  You can continue with psychological treatment after you have used your 10 sessions but no further Medicare rebates would be available.

GPs can also refer people with severe ongoing problems to Medicare-subsidised consultant psychiatrist services, where up to 50 sessions can be provided per year.  NSW government specialised mental health services may also be available.
