Stress Management
Stress involves 3 components:
-
a challenging situation
-
a person's perception of the situation
-
a physiological response
Moderate amounts of stress can be healthy as they motivate an individual to adapt better to situations. Severe levels of stress reduce performance but can be alleviated with psychological strategies such as:
-
Problem solving (brainstorming steps to change the stressful situation)
-
Cognitive restructuring (cultivating more productive perspectives on the situation)
-
Behavioural therapy (such as learning relaxation techniques)
Other Psychological Treatments
Psychological strategies are drawn from the following approaches:
Cognitive Therapy, which aims to decrease biased thoughts which contribute to stress
Behavioural Therapy, which involves practical steps such as gradual immersion in challenging situations until mastery is achieved.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, which is based on striking a balance between self acceptance and change.
Interpersonal Therapy, which is an analysis of relationship issues and patterns, exploring themes like interpersonal conflict, life role transitions and grief.
Solution-Focused Therapy, which is a goal oriented approach that uses a person's strengths, enhances recognition of times when things are working and draws attention to the possibility of small changes having big flow-on effects.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a relaxation technique which enhances the effectiveness of psychological treatment strategies.
